Broken Arrow History | The town´s name, Broken Arrow originated with the Creek Indians when they were moved from Georgia to Oklahoma on the Trail of Tears in 1826. The Georgia creek they lived by and broke reeds from to form their arrows, they had named Broken Arrow. When the Arkansas Valley Town Site was granted the land rights of a new town about 5 miles from the Creek Indians in 1902, Mr. WS Fears, named the small town the same; Broken Arrow. There were a number of Creek Indians who were quite prosperous in the area despite the setbacks you can read about in your history books.
A few of the more prosperous Creek family names are in print at the Tulsa Central Library. They include the Perrymans´, the Childers and the McIntoshes. A member of the Perryman family named George Perryman leased land to some Texas ranchers. And Mr. Elam Hodge, another member of the Perryman family owned land in the area and sold portions to gentlemen from the east interested in building a general store and cotton gin. The gentlemen named the small site Elam in his honor. While the small town flourished, the railroad did not pass the town of Elam and instead passed by Broken Arrow. So the community of Elam moved to Broken Arrow and continued their good fortune there. Mr. Franklin, another freedman of the Creek Nation was paid handsomely for his 120 acres also located in what is today, Broken Arrow.
